Open House

Yesterday was the official open-house for the studio, with a wine-and-cheese reception. I partnered with artist Eugenia Martin for the event. All together there were probably nearly 100 works on display, and as many visitors. The turn-out was very good and it went very well with the help of my friends and neighbors. Everyone had a good time and several pieces were sold.

Having a Ball

This weekend I was looking for both inspiration, and an antique mason jar to paint. I went across the street to Cane Ridge Antiques, owned by my neighbors Kevin and Melissa Horne, to 'borrow' some of their jars. They often let me use props for my still life paintings from their shop.

However, when I found the 'perfect mason' jar, I also fell in love with the green shelf it was sitting on. The only solution was to set up and paint right there in the showroom. It was also fun having people come and watch as I painted away. [11"×14"] $175 Sold

St. Peter's Cathedral

This is a commissioned painting of St. Peter's Cathedral at sunrise. I wanted the cathedral to be warm and imposing against the cold city-scape behind it. The front has a gilt mosaic which becomes the brightest spot and focal point of the painting. The Things I Remember

I had a busy weekend and got a lot done. First of all, I picked up two new commissions. The first is due by Easter! Fortunately, I got right on it and was able to finish up Sunday, which should give the paint ample time to dry before delivery.

I also finished four other paintings this week of a series that I am calling "The Things I Remember". My goal is to capture objects and places that evoke the emotions associated with remembrance. Most of these paintings will be done outdoors during the spring and summer months.

I also attempted to make my first frame out of old weathered clapboard. However, I need a mitre saw to do this correctly and so the best I came up with was poor. The painting at left is a miniature version (4"×5". $50 Sold) of the painting above. [8"×10"] $175 Sold

With a View to Paradise

Here is the finished commissioned landscape of Hawaii (20" × 16"). I like to tone my canvasses with either light red (English red), or yellow ochre before I begin a painting. In this case, I have "fixed" my charcoal drawing by drawing in the still-wet tone color, then allowing it to dry before painting in the first layer. Commission/Sold

Waiting for a Bath

I spotted this old bathtub waiting for a re-finishing across the street from my studio. It called out to me to be painted, so I set up to do a plein air sketch. Several cars slowed down to observe, and a few people stopped to talk. I had a lot of fun painting this one. [16"×12"] $250 Sold

New Studio Space

I worked this weekend painting a still life of blue bottles in the sun. I am still getting situated, so I wound up with only a few hours of working time before the sun started shifting the colors. This will be a slightly larger painting than the others I have done since January.
I am looking forward to the spring and painting some outdoors where light isn't such an issue.
I finally took photographs of my studio space and have posted them here and below.

First Lesson

This week I taught my first painting lesson in the studio. It gave me a chance to get feedback on my methods and was very productive. The painting shown is the finished exercise.

Tea & Thee

Last night Holly and I went to the studio to work. The lighting is bad in the evening, so I just did some preliminary drawings without shading. The subject this time is a tea cup and spoon. [12"×9" oil on canvas] $100 Available

I spent the rest of the time polyurethaning the door frame while Holly painted the dolls house she is working on.
I ordered some studio lamps today.

Camellias

I finished the sunflower paintings and began a picture of some pink camellias that Holly picked for me. I finished the camellias in maybe four hours (it was a small 12" x 16" panel). The results were good and I think I will paint more of that subject this weekend. My neighbor has some white and red varieties which will paint nicely I think. $100 Sold

First Paintings

This past weekend, I was able to set up and start painting in my new studio for the first time. The very first piece of artwork I did was actually a "poison" label for a jar of solvents, but I then began sketches for three paintings of sunflowers.
The electricity was not connected until yesterday, so Sunday I had to paint while natural light was available.
The sunflower paintings are a commission and have been a lot of fun to paint. I should be finished with them by January 14.
I will post photos as soon as I take some.

Digital Wood Engraving

In commemoration of our recent marriage, I created this bookplate for my bride and myself to use in our new home together.
Using a series of custom brushes which I created for Adobe Illustrator, I am able to design authentic-looking digital "wood engravings". Depending on the technique used, it is also possible to simulate woodcuts and steel engraving.

My new studio

I am opening a new art studio on Main Street in Utica, Mississippi. I will officially be occupying the space on 1 January 2007. Once everything is set up and going, this web log will serve as my daily work journal and portfolio of completed paintings.
